Cologne, January 11, 2017: An industry expert with international experience, Jürgen Schulte-Laggenbeck (51), long-time CFO of OBI AG and the Otto Group, will use his know-how to further speed up the digital transformation process of the Berner Group as new chief financial officer of the family-managed commercial enterprise. Schulte-Laggenbeck was most recently CFO of the Majid Al Futtaim Group in Dubai. He is replacing Mischa Franz at Berner, who is leaving the company at his own request for personal reasons as of the end of February 2017. Until then Mischa Franz will hand over his responsibilities to Jürgen Schulte-Laggenbeck. This ensures a smooth transition.
“We are pleased to have found in Jürgen Schulte-Laggenbeck an experienced and accomplished finance director who will give our group of companies the necessary security in the digital transformation process and the changes it entails,” says Christian Berner, CEO of the group.
Jürgen Schulte-Laggenbeck, who holds a degree in industrial engineering, started his career at the renowned consulting firm McKinsey&Comp. He went on to acquire detailed knowledge in the trade of products in the building and do-it-yourself sectors in various positions at the home improvement giant OBI between 1997 and 2005, from 2001 on as CFO. For about ten years Jürgen Schulte-Laggenbeck was instrumental in shaping the mail order giant Otto Group (c. EUR 12 billion in sales) as CFO. In addition to the Finance Department, he was also in charge of the Legal, M&A, Tax, and Accounting Departments, and had business responsibility for the Financial Services and Real Estate Divisions.
Schulte-Laggenbeck is joining the Berner Group coming from the Majid Al Futtaim Holding (MAF) in Dubai. The core business of the holding company (annual turnover c. USD 8 billion) includes, for instance, the operation of about 20 large shopping centers and Carrefour supermarkets in the Mid-East, Central Asia, and North Africa. As CFO, Schulte-Laggenbeck successfully developed and implemented a performance management system for the holding company.
Mischa Franz (45) is leaving the Berner Group by mutual consent at his own request for personal reasons. Christian Berner thanks him for his services. “Mischa Franz did very valuable work during the first phase of the group’s transformation into a customer-focused company. He has built a strong team and initiated many important projects. We wish him continued great success for the future.”
